Don't Retire, Rewire!

Traditional retirement isn't for everyone. In fact, more and more older Americans are active members of the workforce. And it appears to be a growing trend; we see it at La Costa Glen every day. According to AARP, of the 78.2 million baby boomers in the United States today, 79% are now working or plan to continue working well into retirement. Their reasons are varied and interesting:

• 43% work to stay busy
• 27% work for financial reasons
• 19% work to afford extras in life

In their book, Don't Retire, Rewire, Jeri Sedlar and Rick Miners offer more interesting statistics about today's workforce, along with inspiring tips for those who wish to continue working — as a volunteer or for pay. Here are just a few of their suggestions:

• View the future as a beginning, not an ending.
• Know what motivates you to work beyond money.
• Be flexible and willing to try new things.
• Consider temporary work to explore new ideas.
