Top Golfers Take Home the Trophy at La Costa Glen

Share After 12 months of grueling competition, Edna Baldwin and Ernie Bettin emerged as the 2010 winners of the La Costa Glen Cup, the golf tournament for the residents of La Costa Glen. More than 30 residents of the retirement community in Carlsbad, Calif., participated in the finals for the third annual event. Baldwin took top honors in the women's division, while Bettin won the men’s division. The popular tournament is played every year on the community's "Links at La Costa Glen," a six-hole pitch-and-putt course built on a scenic bluff overlooking the Batiquitos Lagoon wildlife area. ...

Falling in Love at the Glen

Share By George L. England Sr. On April 6, 2009, I moved to La Costa Glen. My second day at the Glen, a resident invited me to have dinner with seven other residents and I graciously accepted. This dinner was the first of several significant emotional events to happen in my life. I was seated next to one of the several charming ladies at the table. She introduced herself as Margie McGrath. During the course of the evening we chatted among all and became acquainted, discussing our families and geographic roots. I found that Margie and I had the same numbers in...

Bridge Bonanza

Share By Bunny Anderson The game of Bridge is played here every day of the week, sometimes for fun, sometimes for competition, and always for mental stimulation. Guess what? It seems we finally hit the jackpot — no, make that the Grand Slam — when we hired the new Bridge Director, Norman Schwartz. Often he’d say, "I gotta get that closet cleaned out one of these days." Fibber was the foible-prone husband and Molly was the patient, honey-natured wife — the perfect comedy team. While downsizing to move to LCG, many of us found that we too had closets full of "stuff." Since we moved here over seven years ago, we have accumulated "stuff" and have a...

February Display Cases

Share Contributed By Jen Krail For the month of February, the Lakeside display case will feature handmade dolls by Hillside resident Orpha Cade. She’s had so much fun over the years, making all kinds of dolls. Her first dolls in 1966 were papier mache. Since she loves to sew, her next dolls were all cloth and handmade. Later, she had a next-door-neighbor who had a kiln, so she advanced to china or bisque dolls, which she fired in her kiln. Among those on display are a Hilda doll and a Bye-Lo Baby doll, which is a reproduction of a 1922 doll with a painted...
