Rose and Landscape Committee

Share  - By Elanor Seidenglanz - The Rose Committee, chaired by Ernie Bettin, has approximately 16 members and is responsible for maintaining the three rose gardens here at LCG. The committee is broken into two groups which look after the gardens in the south and north campuses. The garden that graces the main entrance has approximately 200 varieties of bushes. The members use a systemic fertilizer which nourishes and protects the bushes from insects and some diseases. During the growing season,  members dead head the bushes every week by cutting off dead blooms. The beautiful blooms are harvested weekly and bouquets are...

Safety Committee

Share  - By Bunny Anderson - This committee meets once a month under the chairmanship of Carolyn Lawson. There are 16 members and they look to Glenn Thomas (our popular Manager of Safety) to give suggestions they feel should be brought to the attention of management. This group also assists the Safety Department in educating residents in such areas as emergency preparedness and pedestrian and vehicle traffic control issues. There are times when a fall by a resident will focus their attention on  suggestions for removing a curb or circumventing a planting area that might cause a problem. They sponsored a recent...

October Display Cases

Share  - By Better McCreary - Nancy Muschek of Parkside will show some of her fabulous quilts in the Lakeside Display cases. She will also have a quilting demonstration on October 1st from 10:00-11:00am in Lakeside Terrace. Her quilts have been shown in many quilt shows including the international show in Leon, France, where she won a prize with her “Almost Amish” quilt. Her “Geranium” quilt won first prize...

The Gardener and the Cook

Share  - By Carole Eibelheuser - When we arrived in California from New Jersey in 1989, Jay was ecstatic because of the 12-month growing season and enough space in our yard to plant lots of things. He planted a large variety of fruit trees and berries. Going into the backyard and picking a lemon from our very own tree was exciting for these east coast transplants. Then there were the TOMATOES piled up on the kitchen counter! On a hot summer day I would wash and quarter them to be ready for our hand cranked “machine.” Jay would attach this time saving...

My First Job

Share Contributed by Art Prine As a 16-year-old high school sophomore in 1941, I obtained a job as a clerk in a stamp catalog warehouse in Indianapolis. The pay for working afternoons after school and Saturdays was $6 per week. At the end of the first week, I received a check for $6 and signed a receipt for 20 hours at 30-cents per hour - to equal $6.00.  As I signed the slip, I said to my boss, “You are right, the total is $6.00, but I really worked about 30 hours.” He replied, “What difference does it make? Working 30 hours at 20-cents...

Readers' Theatre

Share  - Contributed by Andy Dunk - The Readers’ Theatre is a group of amateurs, all LCG residents, who love theatre and all its parts. One of the advantages of Readers’ Theatre is that it doesn’t require memorization. Memorizing is not easy, as many of you probably know! They read and evaluate short plays, poems, and other literature of possible interest to large audiences. Each member is encouraged to participate in as many readings as possible. They encourage members to bring some readings of interest to perform and share with other members. The group is open to all LCG residents who share their...

The Beauty Around Us

Share  - By Ruth Van Wyck - Lakeside waterfall: crows' birdbath - no blue herons allowed! Picture by Vahac Mardirosian As you walk the paths of La Costa Glen do you ever wonder how it can remain so beautiful? At almost every turn there is another sight to stop and enjoy. Well, here are some answers for you. Susan Angonia is in charge of tending the plants and trees in the many corners of our community. She leads 13 men who work every day on our property. These men do many chores besides the obvious caring for our lawns. They re-plant beds of...
