Ernie and Barbara Bettin have been residents of La Costa Glen since December, 2007, when they became the first residents in their Building. Since that time Ernie has endeavored to stay busy and get involved. Currently he is a member of the Rose and Landscape, Greenhouse, Food and Beverage and Computer Committees. His other activities include tending a garden plot, bible study, volunteering for a tax aid program, LCG golf, and participation in water aerobics (Aquamen and water volleyball). Whew!
Ernie was born and raised on farms near La-Grange, Illinois, and Bloomington, Indiana, where he perhaps picked up his later avocation for gardening. In 1946 he enlisted in the Army and served with the Occupational Forces in Japan for two years. He was on the troop ship to Japan when a friend suggested that he might want to correspond with a charming lady who lived in LaGrange. They became pen pals and Ernie finally met Barbara in person upon his return from duty. With the GI bill he enrolled at the University of Indiana in Bloomington. Ernie and Barbara were married just after his sophomore year (1950). He ultimately earned B.S. and M.B.A. degrees to establish his career in accounting as a CPA.
Ernie and Barbara moved to Acadia, California in 1968, with three children (including a set of twins) and a growing career. Professionally Ernie worked in both the financial and scientific industries, guiding both through the perils of emerging computer technology with the financial perspective of a company controller. He retired in 1988 allowing them to travel and devote time to gardening.
Now in La Costa Glen they can enjoy their three daughters and three grandchildren. In August of this year they will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary. Ernie said that their marriage was “the best decision I ever made.”
