This reporter graduated from high school in Newton, Iowa, home of the Maytag Washer Co. My mother, several other teachers and the city librarian, Blanche Maytag, played cards together.
One evening this group was invited to Blanche’s house for a sleep-over. The other ladies were childless, but Mom brought me along. I got one of the guest rooms in her large home and the bed had silk sheets. I vowed that someday I’d have silk

Nan Shu is a resident of La Costa Glen. She also owns a home in Rolling Hills, near Los Angeles. Nan is an avid art collector and her collection includes a beautiful display of crystal objects, figurines, and cloisonné, ivory and jade.
Nan is known here for her generosity. When she has a continental breakfast on the Lakeside Terrace, she always brings a large platter of fresh fruit to share. Her doorway always displays artwork appropriate to the season, and there is always
a dish filled with candy on the shelf.
Before her retirement, Nan worked at the...
