La Costa Glen’s Green Team means business

- Carlsbad Business Journal, April 2010 - The La Costa Glen Green Team, from left to right: Kavin Ward, Alva Peterson, Bixby Smith, Lupe Solorzano, Diana Blanc, Ryan Exline, Darcie Gorman Like many superheroes, Darcie Gorman has an alter ego. But unlike the superheroes of yore, the director of accounting for La Costa Glen Carlsbad does not have to wait till cover of darkness to reveal her super self; she just prefers it that way. "I love turning off the lights," she said. "O gosh yes. Just ask my family. Everybody, turn off the lights!" Gorman is one of the retirement community's eco-crusaders,...

Hooked on Radio

 - By Marian Goe -   Family life at our house back in the 30s centered around the radio. First came the tabletop model that sat near the bay window in our living room. My sister and I would sit quietly by waiting our turn to hear Little Orphan Annie or Jack Armstrong. Mother"s special moment occurred earlier when she would stop all work to hear Ma Perkins and Stella Dallas. We knew when dad came home because he would listen to the ball game. An announcer by the name of "Dutch" Reagan was broadcasting games and sportscasts on WHO in...

Street Names - Part I

- By Ray Holt - How La Costa Glen's distinctive street names were chosen and adopted immediately arouses questions such as: From where or whom did they come? Who chose them? Who approved them? What is a Rush Rose or a Lemonberry? Why not good old names like chrysanthemums, lilies, daises, etc?   The facts are logical enough when recalled by Marketing Director Michael O'Conner. The Powder Puff Derby

 - By Marian Goe - It was fun for me to meet an unusual resident of LCG who tried something daring and exciting with her life while still in her prime years. Such a lady is Edna Baldwin. Edna was co-pilot with her sister, Frances Bera, in the famous Powder Puff Derby during the late 40s and 50s. It was a trans-continental event for women pilots who entered the National Air Races in Cleveland. Competitors were not allowed to use any navigational aids except a road map, so flying was limited to daylight hours. Ninety women were members of the...
