Fitness Corner: News from the Fitness Committee

- Contributed by Joy Wiker -

Clare Sheldon, a Sea Breeze resident, grew up in England walking the hillsides of Cheshire with her father. She has always enjoyed walking and continues this healthy activity here at La Costa Glen in the early morning hours. You may have seen her as she travels the property every day except for Tuesday where you will find her at the Batiquitos Lagoon with fellow residents. Clare says, “It’s a great opportunity to see all the wildlife and just enjoy nature.” When Clare was a working gal she used to walk 3/4 miles each way from her home to the bus stop and back for her commute to work. While living in Australia she even walked 2 1/2 miles each way to her office!

Although Clare always continued walking, she did not start attending structured fitness classes until retiring, after thirty years, as an executive secretary and accountant with Bechtel. In 2003, she developed a serious heart infection, which resulted in her having two heart valves replaced in separate surgeries. After recovering, Clare began to exercise again.

In addition to Clare’s walking routine she also participates in the fitness classes here at LCG. She attends hour long aerobics classes on Mondays and Wednesdays, and a 40-minute class on Fridays, followed by Bocce, which she really enjoys. On Tuesdays and Thursdays she takes the 45-minute Strength Training class. For more exercise, Clare plays ping-pong on Tuesday evenings and when she has any extra time she works out in the gym. Clare has taken advantage of the Fitness Department programs including the Senior Fitness Test. She feels all of the activity has paid off, as her last annual fitness test showed improvement in most categories compared to the previous year. Congratulations!
