Pat Spencer is showing her favorite paper weights from her 80-piece collection in the Fairway display cases in May.
She started collecting when she was a little girl. These weights are all made of glass. One is a 40-year old green glass globe with a cameo of Jack Kennedy in the center.
Four years ago she took a glass making course at the University of Oregon. When making the globes she had to wear 100% cotton because of the fire hazard. The molten glass was fired in a 2,200-degree oven. After shaping the glass, the last step was a 12-hour cooling oven.
Mixed in with the paperweights are pieces from Rita Bell’s Lilly of the Valley collection of china, vases and more. Rita has a May birthday, which is the “Lilly of the Valley” month.
In Lakeside, we are featuring a collection of handmade wooden decorations from La Costa Glen’s inventory of party supplies. Most of the pieces were designed by resident Donna Santos (who recently passed away) and painted by Donna or one of many resident volunteers.
Some of our favorites include St. Valentine’s Day hearts, spring flowers and Halloween themed items. How many can you remember?
